Award-winning Nostell Priory Lantern
The National Trust commissioned a 1.5m x 0.7m wooden lantern to hang in Nostell Priory.
We created a full-sized, working drawing from the architect’s concept drawing. The lantern’s sculpted frame was made out of mahogany, topped by large decorative scrolls which were each carved out of a single piece of timber.
An inner ‘skeleton’ for the lantern was created in steel, set into the timber ribs, to strengthen the wooden structure and allow it to be hung from a chain attached to the ceiling. The lantern was a composite structure, with glass windows held within a brass frame.
The whole structure was then gilded before being installed at Nostell Priory.
